On the mudflats near Engare Sero, a group of people once walked through fresh volcanic ash and mud from Ol Doinyo Lengai. The mud set hard and kept their footprints — hundreds of them — making this one of the largest sites of ancient human footprints in Africa.
Walking beside the tracks, you can see where people ran, walked together and changed direction thousands of years ago. It is a short, easy visit that is easy to combine with the walk to Lake Natron.
